*significantly less pain than open surgery or even laparoscopy

*less blood loss than open or straight laparoscopic surgeries

       *fewer complications

*enhanced view of operative field for the surgeon increasing safety for the patient

       *less scarring

       *shorter hospital stay

The versatility of robotic surgery allows for use in multiple different surgical situations.  Listed below are but a few of the usual indications for surgery include:

  • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)

  • Treatment for endometriosis, pelvic pain or scar tissue

  • Endometrial cancer (also known as uterine cancer)

  • Heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Ovarian cysts or tumors

  • Cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers

  • Uterine or bladder prolapse – surgery for pelvic relaxation, such as uterine or bladder descent (feeling of coming out)

  • Urinary incontinence (urine leakage)

  • Restoration of fertility after tubal ligation

  • Uterine reconstruction

Single Site Surgery has arrived in San Antonio
The surgeons at Alamo Women's Health OBGYN now offer single site robotic surgery.

What does this mean?
For those candidates that qualify, it means complex surgery such as removal of scar tissue, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and even hysterectomies through near scar-less surgery. All the while maintaining the safety and precision that robotic surgery provides. The doctors at Alamo Women's Health now offer this technique to the women of San Antonio. With state-of-the-art da Vinci Single-Site, our specially trained doctors can remove your uterus with the least invasive incision possible.

Patients who choose da Vinci Single-Site Surgery experience virtually scarless results, similar to single incision traditional laparoscopy. Hysterectomy Incision Comparison to the result achieved through da Vinci technology, da Vinci Single-Site Hysterectomy offers the following potential benefits:
-Low blood loss
-Low rate of converting to traditional laparoscopy and open abdominal surgery
-Low rate of complications
-Short hospital stay
-Small incision for virtually scarless results

We offer multiple techniques to help correct heavy menstrual bleeding without resorting to a hysterectomy.  We can offer standardized techniques such as endometrial rollerball ablation.  We also provide the latest technology called MINERVA system that provides the highest patient care and effectiveness.

The ACESSA Procedure presents a new standard of care for patients suffering from uterine fibroids. With the ACESSA procedure, a woman’s symptoms are significantly reduced or eliminated while preserving a healthy uterus. This minimally invasive, laparoscopic outpatient procedure enables the patient to quickly return to a normal quality of life without the potential long-term complications or long recovery time associated with hysterectomy. Patients return home the same day and typically resume work and other normal daily activities in 3-5 days. Importantly, the procedure has an excellent safety profile with a less than 4% complication rate and a very low incidence of recurring symptoms or the need for additional intervention

Fire Fly technology
The "Firefly" addition from Novadaq utilizes cutting edge imaging systems with 3D vision from the da Vinci to find and isolate endometriosis.  This treatment capitalizes on the fact that endometriosis involves angiogenesis where there is the new and abnormal growth of small blood vessels that proliferate to feed the endometriosis.
Endometriosis is the abnormal ectopic growth of endometrial glands on structures such as the peritoneal lining of the abdomen and pelvis, bladder, fallopian tubes, bowel, and other surfaces including the ovaries and uterus. The result of endometriosis is inflammation and chemical reactions such as increased prostaglandins that cause pain, adhesions that may stick together closing off structures like the fallopian tubes, causing scarring, loss of motility of the fallopian tubes, and also rejection of pregnancy implantation in the uterine cavity resulting in infertility.
"Firefly" involves the injection of a commonly used dye which lights up blood vessels with the distinct neon color of green.  This is performed while viewing the contents and lining of the abdomen and pelvis laparoscopically with the da Vinci Robotic assisted near infrared camera thru a small incision in or near the umbilicus and while the patient is under general anesthesia in an operating room. This florescence imaging then facilitates identifying endometriosis more easily and more thoroughly to then remove those lesions to promote the healing of normal tissue and reduce the harmful effects of endometriosis. Since some of endometriosis are not readily seen with conventional surgery or laparoscopy alone, this technique appears to be a breakthrough in better identifying these abnormal areas.  Now with the advent of "Firefly" the surgical evaluation and treatment of endometriosis through the da Vinci has taken another unique step forward to improve the treatment of this disabling condition.
